Why can't we conduct online banking transactions on a weekend?

For example I use bank A to send money to my friend at bank B on Saturday. The transfer takes 3 days starting from the first banking day. Why is this money not instantly transferred?

The weekend has nothing to do with it. These transfers always take two-three days..it's the way it's been for quite some time.

I think it is designed to be slower on purpose...so people don't do it very often...and play check kiting games and whatnot.

electronic transfers are not intended for emergency use. They are for preplanned payments
No one's there to process it on the weekend.
Simple.. Both your Bank A as well as your friends Bank B has to clear the transaction. It will be done a working day only.
