Im wondering about online banks? not paying bills online, but banks that are just online?

Great question. I use online banking accounts such as those offered by EmigrantDirect, GMACbank, and INGdirect. They are a safe way to make a decent return on saved cash, currently around 5.0%. GMAC offers a nice way to access your cash, through check or ATM card.

Registering is simple, requiring your SSN and drivers license number. Deposits are FDIC-insured, the same protection as that offered by a traditional "bricks-and-mortar" bank.

Idea: Wait for them to offer a promotion! It is not uncommon to see them offer new accounts a free $25 to $75 bonus just for setting up an online banking account.

The link below discusses one such offer from Citibank.

Good luck! Source(s): http://www.mymoneyblog.com/archives/2007...

AWESOME! They are a great way to store an emergency fund...I join ING Direct and they give me a much higher return on my money than a typical savings bank...they are easy to deposit into and easy to withdraw from...they link to you're reg. bank account...
Definitely a smart way to go. The money you'll be making is real, and online-only banks can offer much higher interest rates because they don't have to keep up brick and mortar businesses.... pay for air-conditioning, water coolers and donuts on Saturday mornings.

If you want a quick comparison of High-Yield Savings accounts, I definitely recommend LendingTree's new savings comparison site:

*** And remember, any interest you gain over the course of the year will be reported in your taxes as income, so it's not all gravy.

Good luck!

I tried that once. To deposit money, I had to mail them a check or money order. This is fine as long as you manage your money and can wait 3-5 business days for it to be deposited. Make sure your paychecks are automatically deposited that way you won't have to worry about mailing them in every few weeks. Oh, and make sure they give you ATM rebates so if you use a bank's ATM, you don't have to pay that extra $1.5 or $2.
