Pet insurance for a Great Dane?

I am purchasing a Great Dane puppy and would like to know if anyone out there would recommend buying pet insurance for this breed. At what age to buy it? What company to go thru? I'm hoping not to spend more then $20/month...is it worth it?

When we were looking for insurance, only VPI, Embrace and Pets Best had premiums that were in the $20 range. The trouble with VPI is that they pay on a schedule of benefits which are prices they set for each thing the vet does. I didn't hear good things about them so went with Pets Best instead. I read that the younger a dog is when you purchase the insurance the more likely things are to be covered and not be pre-existing. We have insurance on our pups but haven't really had to use it yet. We're glad to know that if something big happens that it's there.

The younger the better, it really pays off in the end. I have VPI for my Boxer. I have been using it since he was a puppy and it has saved me alot of money. It is just like having insurance for yourself.
As soon as you send in the AKC papers.. you will get addresses of insurance companies offering different things.

Nah, I wouldn't buy insurance for a Great Dane. Maybe a Rottweiler, or some other "aggressive-type" breed.

Great Dane's are the "gentle giants" of the dog world. I've never encountered one with a bad disposition. I suppose, considering their size, they could be like a bull in a china shop if enclosed in a small space, but that's the only problem I could think of with them.

The breed generally isn't susceptible to major hereditary illnesses or defects as far as I know...Perhaps some problems with arthritis here and there.

Anyway, I would say no, it's not worth it.
