Is there a military waiver for South Carolina's vehicle property tax? |
They want us to pay more than $500 for our motor vehicle property tax but we no longer live in SC. I was told that some states will waive things like these for active duty military or at least offer a discount. Is there some kind of discount or waiver for South Carolina? It depends on where you are now and where you have your car titled and registered. I always changed my vehicles over to wherever I was stationed, and in six states over 25 years, all had tax exemptions for military whose home of record was in a different state. call the dmv in sc only they can answer this and probably not your not stationed here If your in the military you do not necessarily have to pay any state tax or change your license plate. If you do not live there just don't pay it. They can not make you if your no longer living in that state. It would appear there is not a general exemption for military, at least not at the state level. See the link below. You might try asking the county that is attempting to charge the tax. As you no longer live in SC there may be a way to avoid or pro-rate the tax. You can only ask. http://www.sctax.org/tax+information/pro... It depends on the tax laws of each state. For instance my hubby and I live in California, but he is a resident of Washington State which has no state tax, so he dosen't have to pay state tax, but I do because I am not military. Even though you have moved, you still lived in S. Carolina for part of the tax year, so you will owe taxes to them. Contact your Family Services on your local base to be sure. What state is your vehicle registered in? If you still have SC plates your going to pay SC tax. If you have moved out of state, then register the vehicle in your new . Gotta pay that vehicle tax to someone. |
