My Illinois property tax assessment went up. Is there any way to fight this? or is it futile.? |
I live in Illinois. My property tax assessment went up 9.3% this year. I know the market is down. Is there any way for me to fight this? Do I even have a chance to lower it, or is it a futile effort. Just go to your County Assessors office and file an Appeal. Not sure how it is in Illinois but in Indiana they have 45 days to contact you and they'll either settle it or you'll go before a board of appeals. Make sure and have any information you have on the assessed value of your home....i.e. an appraisal or any houses that are for sale in your neighborhood try to get a listing of what they are being sold for. Source(s): Used to work on the Appeals in Indiana Sure. Appeal it to your county/city. That's why I got out of The Peoples Republik of Flatlandistan... In my state (Texas) we are given an opportunity to contest appraisals and I have successfully done so on occasion. Contact your local county tax assessment/appraisal office to determine if this is so in your state. 9.3% seems really high to me. you can always write a letter to the assessors office. I did this for my mo home and I brought my tax down by 1.5% not a whole lot but every % helps. What I did on my letter is stated why I didn't thing the value of my home or property was worth what they said it was. They saw it my way and that was that. it don't hurt to try. |
