Selling Renter's Insurance? |
I live in a college town, with thousands of rental properties, and I'd like to try my hand at selling Renter's Insurance. I have a couple of questions: First, how does someone go about becoming an agent? Second, is it possible to sell <exclusively> Renter's Insurance, and not bother selling other types (home, auto, etc). How would I go about starting things up? To sell insurance, you need a license. having said that, there are renters companies that will give you a referral fee for each person you sign up- I have seen these ads in landlord magazines. you would basically not have anything to do with it other then having people sign up with your reference code- and collect a small flat fee for each person. the fee must be flat, if i recall, since it is a referral fee and not a commission, for which you would need to be licensed as an agent. First you will need to find a company to be an agent for. That can take a lot of money to get one staffed and running. Renters policies don't pay much money. I make about $20 on an average policy. If you are looking to do this full time, I would reccommend offering as many insurance lines as possible. If you are just looking for some extra mney here and there, you may go check with some local agencies to see if you can be a producer for them. This usually involves some sort of commision split, and no overhead because you would use their office. After you get your license, you could start selling part-time, see if you like it or not, without throwing down a bunch of cash on overhead. Then if you love it, become your own agent and have your own office. |
