Can IL employers require a copy of my childs birth certificate & social security card for Insurance purposes?


My ex just started a new job in IL & the HR guy told him he has to have a copy of my daughters birth certificate & social security card for his medical file in order for my ex to cover our daughter on his insurance. My ex is a crackpot & I do not want him to have access to this, he is a lazy, good for nothing & when we were together I BEGGED him to go & get these things & he wouldn't & I don't have the time. I don't think it's legal for them to require this info, anyone know??

Yes, if the child is not living in your home, the employer has a right AND DUTY to have paternity established on the child before adding them. The birth certificate establishes paternity, the social security number is not required, although the insurance company won't add the child without it. Source(s): agent, 21+ years
They're trying to make certain that it is indeed your ex's child and that he's entitled to include the child under his insurance. I think it's perfectly reasonable for them to want to do this in order to keep their costs down. Maybe your ex could put you in touch with the HR person "because she's the one who handles all this and she's the one that has the documents". Please don't make it because your ex is a dope.

Looks like you'll have to find the time to go and get the documents yourself.

However, if you don't want your ex to have it, call the HR department at his work and make arrangements to send them directly to the employer.
Yes; it is verification of eligibility. Be thankful (either to your ex or the court decree) that your kids will be covered. The fact that this is an issue with you makes me question just who is "lazy and good for nothing."
