I applied for social security disability insurance they said that i will get them after 5 months?

I've been told that Iam eligable 5 months after I applied. I've been told that they back pay you to the day you applied is this true or does it start after 5 months. I find it odd that they make you wait for 5 months how do they expect a disabled person to survive for the five months if they can't work?

It's actually a total of six months from the time you were disabled, and there is no guarantee you will be approved then. It's just the time you have to wait to apply. They really could care less if you survive or not, as a matter of fact it's to their benefit if you don't.
they have a certain time limited if you just became disable your job long or short term disablity should take care of you for about 3-10 months that is why SSDI dont just in right away.
This is the current rule of law. In truth it takes them that long to get off their a** and work on your claim. There is an out on this. Have a doctor declare you terminally ill and most likely to die before six months is up. Your claim begins date of filing, usually. Unless some overpaid butt-sitter misinterprets their own rules. Then, God help you. Maybe a good lawyer also.
Relative died of cancer before jumping through all hoops.
You will recieve a lump sum after the 5 months.. You did not say what the disability was and depending what the monthly check will be.. Lets say $550.00 an month times 5 = $2,750.00..

The reason it takes 5 months is because they have to go thru all your records, Doctor records, about you and you past earnings...

One more thing.. If you are not completely disabled.. You are not allowed to bank that money.. So spend it, and spend it well.. You will never see so much money like that in a long time..
Dennis, write to your local paper, but down exactly what you stated here, and even if your not a member, write to the AARP,tell them whats going on,they are well verse in these matters and can help you.
You have to question the validity of any government policy.

It is true that it takes a long time--but when the government is involved it is rare that it makes sense.

When somebody eligible for SS benefits dies, the government sends the survivors about $250--the same amount as they did back when SS was new. That is money for burying the deceased. Whoever heard of a funeral costing $250? You can't bury your dog for that much.

It is a crazy system. Did you know that congressmen don't participate in SS? They have their own benefits, but they don't fix the problems that us peons have with ours.
