Is there a future selling insurance for State Farm?

Right now, State Farm is looking for agents. Their demographic on agents right now is looking pretty grim: about 20% of their agency force is over 65.

State Farm is a very inbred company. Everybody is somehow connected to someone else. On the Agency side, you'll see a lot of "touchy-feely" types. They're also very concerned about whether or not you're "State Farm material," whatever that is.

If you choose to be an agent with State Farm, keep in mind that it is one of the most captive contracts in the industry. Also, they can get rid of you for no reason. At least with Farmers they need to have cause to can you. Also, State Farm restricts writing business at whim. They're still recovering in California from their decision to restrict writing homeowners insurance a few years ago.

As someone who has gone through their most recent Agency recruiting program, but didn't go through with it, I can tell you that, while the opportunity may sound great, you are under constant scrutiny. If you don't mind feeling an oppressive company presence at all times, it may be for you. When you start, you will probably have an Agency Field Executive or Agency Field Consultant in your office once or twice a week to ask why you aren't selling more life insurance or financial products.

I'm with Farmers and I couldn't be happier. I feel like I dodged a bullet. The company culture is much more open and the standards for success are clearly spelled out. If you ask State Farm how many policies you need to write to be successful, they won't tell you. They'll just throw it back in your face, "how many policies do you THINK you need to be successful?" Mind games and doublespeak.

There are very many good people in State Farm. It's the company culture that sucks.
