Has anyone had a problem with State Farm Homeowner's insurance? |
Everyone in our neighborhood got a new roof after the last hailstorm, but we didn't. There was a special on our news about State Farm denying most of their customers new roofs. Anyone else have this problem? Aerowrite is 100% correct. Hail is a strange thing and it can cause major damage to your neighbor and no damage at all to your house. We had a major hail storm a few years ago and there was no hail damage to our roof. Others had damage but it depends on the age of your roof, the angle the hail was coming down, the angle of your roof. Also with a hail damage claim the company will pay for new shingles for the ones that have been damaged. Let's say the adjuster goes up and there are 5 shingles that have hail dents. The adjuster is going to pay for 5 new shingles. The roofing contractor is ALWAYS going to tell you you need a new roof. They are sales people and they don't want to patch up a roof, they want to do a whole new roof for you. Call State Farm and ask them to have another adjuster come out and inspect your roof. They will send out another adjuster and make sure you are there with him. He will be able to show you the hail dents so you can see what is damaged. Source(s): Agent with 25 years of experience and to many hail storms to count. Sorry, but no I did not have that problem. They arent even accepting any new claims in MS i believe, whats up with that. State Farm is in serious financial trouble. They insured waaay too many people for really cheap (that's why they were the biggest insurer of personal lines) but now its come back to haunth them. There have been numerous problems with State Farm in the news in the past few months. Thousand upon thousands of people are having trouble with them. I hope you get your situation straightened out. As soon as you do, drop them and go to someone else. State Farm has announced that it will not write any new policies in Mississippi because of the lawsuits against it after Katrina. Apparently, State Farm has very carefully worded policies and they stick to the letter of that wording. By the way, State Farm is NOT in financial trouble. They made a record profit in the 2005 hurricane year -- despite high insurance payouts. Do you have wind coverage, as well as water coverage, as well as "severe weather" coverage? If you don't have the right combination of coverages to handle all the ways the damage could have happened to your roof, you could be in for a lawsuit yourself. In the Katrina cases, State Farm is arguing that the damage is the result of "storm surge", and since so many houses (that were damaged by the hurricane) were later flooded as a result of storm surge, they have used that to deny claims saying everything is a result of storm surge. While this may have been true for some claims, in my opinion there is a lack of integrity in how State Farm has been operating. Also, if people buy hurricane insurance, but will need several other types of coverage to really be protected, why weren't they warned upfront? If I had purchased hurricane insurance, I'd certainly think I was covered for any damage as a result of hurricane -- including storm surge. This isn't personal experience, but I know that my parents had problems with a claim to State Farm. That was over 20 years ago, but it would seem that their approach may not have changed. My parent's claim was legitimate -- they are very honest people -- and it was automatically denied. They needed to get a lawyer. It's a sad thing, but the only "service" that I know of, where you have paid for it upfront, and then are in an antagonistic situation as soon as you actually *require* the service, is insurance. financial writer for www.insuranceguide101.com |
