Can you live in one state and get auto insurance in another? Is this illegal? Doing this is insurance fraud. If you have an accident, the accident will be investigated, then, when the company finds out you live in a different state, they will DENY coverage. So, what will happen is you will actually be driving without insurance. Then, you will be in even more trouble by having an accident without insurance. Don't do it. We have people all the time trying to do this. We live in a border town near a state with much more expensive insurance rates. We just say, sorry we can't help you & tell them to get coverage online. An agency is licensed through the state, so an out of state agency may or may not be licensed to sell you insurance in your state. It's based on your legal residence. Many border towns carry licenses for both states, since they draw across borders. As long as the agency is licensed in that state it will be alright. Agents are liscenced in the state they live in. you can't get insurance in another state because insurance laws may be different in another state. Not only no but hell no. Unless you are a full-time student, which makes you a temporary resident, you have to have insurance in the state you are living in. You may have an agent licenced to insure in more than one state, but your policy has to be issued to your residence address by a company licenced in that state. Taking out a policy in another state where the insurance is cheaper is called insurance fraud. Most companies tie into the postal system and verify your address. You can't do this |
