What is the best used car to buy for a student who has to pay their own insurance in the state of new jersey?

That probably depends on whether you will be buying comprehensive and collision insurance. Liablility insurance is what the state will require, but is based on you (and since you're young and inexperienced, so it'll be plenty big!) Comp and collision, however, isn't mandatory, but anyone who finances a car for you will insist on it. Also, if you're car is somewhat above the "junker" category it's worth considering. It pays for damage to your vehicle caused by you, theft or natural acts (falling rocks, etc.)

If so, those premiums are based at least in part on what kind of car you're driving. Generally, the safer a car is, the lower your premiums will be. Also, vehicles that cost less to replace will rate a lower premium.

Web search for Forums for your car, they are very helpful.
Fereral, State, & Local governments have websites.
Simple answer is probably something like a honda civic, 4 door, more than 4 years old. and stay away from collision.

Insurance rates are coming down in Jersey because of all the competition.
