Can I have car insurance from a different state?

I moved to Arizona from Michigan about 4 months ago and I'm still on my old insurance from Michigan. Is this legal? Plus my registration expired and I have yet to register it for Arizona. Went to the DMV website and says I will need my title and old registration to register for the state. Will I get in trouble if it expired already?

I know.. I'm lazy...

DMV just wants to see that you have proof of insurance. They don't care where it's from. They also won't care too much if your registration is expired from your previous state, because what's the cure for expired registration, but--registering your vehicle. If you're there to do that with AZ, they're just as happy to take your registration fees, whatever your history with your last state. Just make sure that the title and the insurance are in your name.

That being said, the INSURANCE company likes to know where you are and gets a little peevish if you don't change your address to your new AZ address...where you live makes a difference in what they can charge you for insurance, based on weather conditions, wacky drivers, demographics, etc. However, I've held out of state insurance for over a year past moving before without a huge problem. It's one of those things that you SHOULD do, but only some people ACTUALLY do. Source(s): Personal experience! I've moved a BUNCHA times to a BUNCHA states!!
Just do it!

no not legal you better get down to the SOS to renew!
You will probably pay a penalty for letting the registration expire. Usually it isn't much if it is less than a month. Don't mention how long you have been there. Your insurance company may carry you in Arizona if it is licensed in the state. Better find out QUICK.
If you have moved to AZ permanently you will need to get a new driver's license as well!!

You CAN re-register your in Michigan with your old address...not ENTIRELY legal but many do it to avoid high insurance costs in other states..
But you also face expired tags - which means you can get pulled over at any time for this - and yes - you will be in trouble...usually it involves expensive tickets and hassles!!
If you have moved - go register your car and get a new license!!
