Does the State of Texas have unemployment insurance ? I know they don't have a state tax, so how is it paid ?

I know there is no state tax for Texas, so how do they pay for things like Unemployment insurance, health care for the poor, things like that ?
And, if you work, and lose your job, do they pay unemployment ?

Yes State of Texas has Unemployment Insurance. I used it once :( Employers pay the insurance "premiums". For you to claim it (I hope you don't have to), you should show that you were employed and earning a qualified salary (I believe at least minimum wage) for 4 out of last 5 quarters. In addition the reason for leaving your last job should not be voluntary, or due to disciplinary action but should be totally something beyond your control - lay off for example. Hope this helps.
Yes, Texas has unemployment compensation. Like most states, it is funded completely by employers' contributions. Your sales tax and business taxes pay for everything the government needs to spend money on.
Lived in TX and did payroll taxes for years.
Employers pay 100% of unemployment insurance. I don't remember what the exact rate it, but it is very very low. It was actually lowered this year by a significant amount, stating that Texas had record low unemployment rates.

As far as healthcare for the poor goes, Texas of course has the Medicaid program. If you make too much money for Medicaid, but can't afford health insurance, you can enroll your kids in the Texas C.H.I.Ps program (childrens health insurance program), where on average you might pay twenty five dollars a month for insurance & get $2 - $4 prescriptions & full medical. I don't know of anything like that for adults.
