Does anyone know of a letter from Mercury Insurance that states they will not total a car? I've never heard of a company not totalling a car depending on its condition after the accident. Some companies offer replacement cost coverage. You can find a local agent here - http://www.insuremyvehicle.com Depending on the particulars of your vehicle and coverage many factors come in to play.
