Do All states require you to drive with Insurance? |
New York Texas Michagan (right or wrongly spelled?) etc........? Technically speaking, Virginia doesn't REQUIRE that you carry liability insurance. However, when you register the vehicle with the DMV you are required to state that you do not carry liability insurance and to pay a $500 fee up front. You also take the risk that someone can come after you personally (including garnishing your wages) for up to 21 years if you have an at-fault accident and don't have any insurance to cover the other party's losses. This can be particularly dangerous if there are injuries. If you fail to pay the $500 fee up front and confess to the DMV that you don't have insurance, then the state can and will be very aggressive about revoking licenses and registrations of anyone found to be without it (even if it's just a random computer check for a car that hasn't moved in months -- if it has license plates, it's subject to the insurance rules.) And getting the license/registration back will be a VERY costly proposition after. Source(s): licensed agent: life & health, property & casualty All drivers need insurance to drive. Correct spelling is Michigan. all states have minumum insurance limits...you cannot get away with not having insurance unless you want to open yourself to a lawsuit if you cause an accident without insurance I believe New Hampshire is the only state that doesn't require you to carry liability insurance, unless you have an at fault accident. In order to get your car registered in any other state, you have to have liability insurance in place, and maintain it. agent, 21+ years Sure do. ALL of them. |
