For auto insurance purposes, is it possible to have dual residence in separate states? |
we live in nj and my wife has her license in ny... can she keep her license in ny even though she's on my nj auto policy? she also has a family residence in ny. It depends on what state your insurance policy is underwritten in and the address on the policy. If you live in NJ, legally she should have a NJ license. The insurance company can cancel the policy if she doesn't....why? Because they can't run a DMV on her and she's not a licensed driver in the state of NJ. FYI......her residency is based upon where she lives, not where her family owns property. Source(s): Been there, done it.... Insurers will ask you WHERE is the car parked at night? What are you going to tell them? I'm sure you're not the only one with this situation so they'll have an answer for you. I do suspect higher insurance premiums though. Good Luck There is no such thing as dual residence, even if you own property in more than one state. Surely you don't pay state income tax in more than one state. That would be your state of residence. As far as insurance goes, it's where it's parked at night that concerns them, and what your rates are based on. You can have her on your policy if they are aware of the facts, but it may not save you any money in reality. Talk to your agent. |
