Why is Health Insurance in New Jersey so much more expensive than other states? According to HIPAA? New Jersey not only has a high number of 'mandated coverages'...Minnesota and Maryland have more than New Jersey...but New Jersey also has a messed up legal system where trial lawyers can make gobs of money. And when trial lawyers make gobs of money filing frivilous lawsuits.....guess who pays? Your premiums reflect that. (and none of this is according to HIPAA....which is the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). You may have meant according to HIAA which stands for the Health Insurance Association of America....the trade group for health insurers. A few years ago....HIAA merged with another group to form a new trade association called AHIP....or America's Health Insurance Plans. Because New Jersey is a state that has one of the largest list of state government mandated types of illnesses that must be covered by any health insurance offered to its state residents. Every mandated illness increases the insurance premium. In addition to "Dav's" answer, you live in a state with a high cost of living index which drives up the cost of health care. There are multiple factors involved with the pricing of health procedures. Your simple question can be answered in volumes. |
