Looking to begin a career in insurance. Who can tell me about Allstate vs State Farm vs independent?

A lot is going to depend on what segment of the market you are looking to focus on.

If you are looking to sell primarily personal lines AllState and State Farm are fine options as the mass marketing will bring in a lot of walk-in business, though Independent Agencies do pretty well in personal lines as well.

If you are looking at selling primarily commercial lines than I highly recommend going to an Independent Agency as those companies you contract with through that agency specialize in commercial products and you will have a lot more options to place commercial business. The only times I run into All State and State Farm on the commercial side of things is on small commercial policies for like main street type business.

The wise thing may be to start out with a direct writer, let them train you and you can get comfortable in the insurance world and then later progress into an Independent Agency when you look to do bigger and better things.

Well the direct writers will give you more support if you want to open your own agency. With an independent agency, you almost HAVE to start working for someone else, so you can meet the marketing reps, get a proven track record, and get the appointments you're going to need.

On the other hand, you have much more capacity to write business as an independent.

In either case, the first few years are HARD. You have to put in massive hours in order to stay afloat.
