Is there any such thing as assistance for college students who need health needs that don't have insurance? |
I have a daughter who needs glasses and she is not covered under family because she is 20 years old. Definitely check with the school. In undergrad I stayed uninsured because I didn't know about the health plan offered thru my University. Now I'm in grad school and my tuition refund (loans not used to pay my tuition and fees) covers my health insurance. It is a great plan and I would be up the creek without it. I'm very sick now. Undergrad was a large state-funded school in the south; grad school is a small private university in New York City and both offered me a plan. The bad news is that many health plans, including the ones through school dont offer great coverage for vision. They may however have riders or sub-plans that offer deep discounts. Also check around at the shops. Many places here in NYC give you a free exam with the purchase of glasses and then you can get a complete set, frames & lenses for about $99. Cohen's is one of those places and I get my glasses and exams there. $100 shouldn't be too much if she has you and the fam to help her I hope. hmmm, can afford to go to college, but can't afford glasses? Why do I find this hard to buy? Sometimes there's some kind of health plan through the school. Especially if it's a state university or something. The college I went to had free basic health care for students and student insurance that I could purchase. I agree with dreamfact. I currently go to school, can't afford health insurance...my college has a free health clinic on campus. Plus little pamplets that you can get for student health insurance. AND most people get financial aid to go to school...so they can pay for school...still don't have enough for insurance. I am living proof! Is she a full time student? If she is, she should be covered under your family plan until age 21 or 23, unless she had a significant break in her schooling. Check it out with your health plan. A lot of retail outlets have exam/glasses package deals. Shop around. The poster who estimated a hundred bucks is probably not far off. Annoying, but most people can usually get it together to do it. I go to Walmart, they're not too expensive. I bring my daughter to America's Best, and the service is TERRIBLE there, but their prices are fabulous. They always have a special going (the doctors aren't bad, just the customer service). |
