Ny tax preparer omitted 1 number on my account when he filed my taxes, what should i do? |
My bank said the direct deposit will not be accepted, so whats gonna happen now? The bank will reject the deposit although it may take it a day to do so. It will then take another couple of days for that to show up on the IRS website. You can either just wait for a paper check in the mail (6 to 8 weeks) or call the IRS and see if there's any way that they can expedite the check. CAll the IRS and see if you can divert it to direct deposit instead of a check being mailed. Worst case, the IRS is mailing out checks for current filings on Feb 23rd. Ask your bank if someone else has the account number that he did list ! Ask your tax preparer to correct the error. He/She should have an electronic filing number and may be able to follow through with that. At least submit a 1040x (an amended return) at no extra cost to you. Congratulations on getting money back! You can go to your preparer and ask them to resubmit with the correct bank info, or you can call the IRS and ask them to cancel the electronic refund and do it again. As a bank employee, I can tell you, there is no other account that matches yours with 1 digit missing. ALL bank account numbers have a check digit built in. Removing any 1 digit will cause the check digit to be wrong. As another answer said, it may take a few days for the bank rejection to show on the IRS website. I don't know what the IRS procedure is in this case. I'm sure calling 1-800-TAX-1040 would answer your question. I imagine the hear it all the time. |
