I coown a house. We pay our mortgage from joint check account. Does it matter who deducts interest from taxes?

I co-own a house under joint-tenancy with a roomate. We pay our monthly mortgage payment using our joint checking account. Does it matter which one of us claims the mortgage interest deduction from our taxes, or do we HAVE to split it in half?

split it according to what percentage each of you paid.
