Tax advice? |
i moved here from florida 2001. i moved in with my disabled brother and his 4 children, when tax time came i went to file and was told that i could file EIC. when i moved i went to file and gave my new address and was told that i could still file EIC and now i'm stuck with a $5000+ tax bill. and anyone help? The best thing you can do is make payment arrangements, up your Federal Withholding at work and hope the next two Federal Returns help you reduce your tax burden until it is paid off. The faster you pay this off the better. The interest will add up quickly. You didn't get in trouble for getting EIC, you got in trouble for claiming children on your tax return which were not your dependents. Hope you learned your lesson. good luck & blessing Source(s): imho If you still qualify for the EIC, but you owe $5,000, then that means you did not have enough taxes withheld. You need to double check your W-4 and submit a new one to increase your withholding. Even if you did your withholding correctly, if you had a lot of income that wasn't subject to withholding, you could find yourself in a situation where you owe. If you moved after you had lived with them for over half of the year, you should still have been eligible to claim EIC based on them if you met all the other EIC requirements. If you didn't live with them for over half the year, then you could not get EIC based on them. A brother and his children are qualifying children under EIC rules, as long as all the other rules are met. The IRS should have told you WHY they disallowed your claim. If you think the determination was wrong, you can appeal it. Otherwise, set up a payment plan and start paying off the tax bill. |
