It is August, is it to late to file my taxes? |
When I went to file my taxes earlier this year, I was told that someone else had filed me, but at the time I filed I didn't know someone had filed me. So is it to late to file on my own? Thank You all!!! If I understand correctly, you want to file an amended return. (1040x) because someone else claimed you as a dependent. It's not too late to file an amended return. You will file the amended return, and probably end up oweing tax. There will be some penalties on the tax, but it shouldn't be too much. It's better to catch it now, and 'stop the clock' on the interest than to wait for the IRS to catch it in an audit. I hope that helps. Source(s): http://www.irs.gov/faqs/faq-kw33.html... Your question does not make sense. This is what I think you said: Someone told you that they were going to file your taxes for you, but you didn't know so you filed your own taxes. The person who said that will file taxes for you also did your taxes. Now, you want to know if you can file your taxes yourself. As stated above, seems like you've already filed for taxes. Why would you need to do it again? On the other hand, it's too late to file for taxes if you haven't done it in April. If you filed for an extension, then it's okay. If you didn't file for an extension, you can still file your taxes, but you'll be charged for a penalty fee. Are you a dependent of your parents? Or married and filing a joint return? If you are on your own, nobody else should be able to claim you and file a return for you. You should contact the IRS, 1-800-829-1040, if you are on your own to find out whether or not they have a return filed for you. If they do, and you didn't file it, then you may be the victim of identity theft. If nobody has filed a return for you, no it is not too late to file a return. You have till October 16, to electronically file a return. I would contact the IRS right away though. Who was it though that told you that someone else had filed a return for you? I would talk to them first before talking to anyone else to get this matter straight. if you filed an extension, you have until 10/15/07. If not, you missed the dealdine but can still file, and should file. tax cpa I really can't add any more than PepsiLime said other than DON'T Procrastinate, get it done! I can't stand the IRS and the income tax and that鈥檚 why I am pushing for the FairTax Act www.fairtax.org BUT until then, we must comply |
