Can i sue my tax preparer if they fail to give me a copy of my tax information.? |
I had a "freind" whos sister did my taxes for me this year. I have been asking for months if she can give me a copy of my information. I need that info if i ever get audited. Any ideas...Help please No, you can't sue over this. What would be the point? You should have made sure you got a copy when you signed the documents. Send her a certified letter giving her 30 days to produce copies of the documents. If she didn't keep any, she can't help you. You can get a photocopy from the tax office. You should already have a copy of yuor info, since you have a copy of your w-2's. If you gave them to the friend then you screwed up, you can only sue if you paid fo rthe service. that would mean you have a receipt for that service as well. you would also have to call the IR and state tax board for where you live and ask for your tax infomation as ell to prove that you even filed. Good Luck Sure, anyone can sue for anything they wish -- this is America after all! Collecting anything is an entirely different matter, however. At best you're only entitled to your actual damages. Since it costs $39.00 to get a copy of your return from the IRS, that's pretty much the limit of what you could recover. If you want to sue someone for $39.00, knock yourself out. Me, I'd rather go fishing. People who have "a "freind" whos sister did my taxes" get what they pay for! Those people also get audited rather frequently. Next year try using a tax professional. They are bonded in most states. |
