How do i file my new born on my taxes without me not receiving his social security card or even the number? did you send in the info required to get a ss #? If so, it can take up to 8 weeks for the card to arrive. You still have plenty of time to file before April 15 after the card gets here. also, was the child born in 2006? if so, then yes, you can claim him. it doesn't matter if it was jan 1 2006 or dec 31 2006. you can only claim him on your 2006 tax return if he was born in 2006. if he was born in 2007, you must wait until next year. You can also go to the health department in THE COUNTY that he was born in and register for a SS # that way. it still may take a few weeks to get, but you MUST have that ## to claim him as a dependant on your return Source(s): Tax preparer for 6 years. is he more than six months old? If so you can't claim him In this day and age, every new baby gets a social security number, How could you not know what it is? Send in with the tax filed a copy of his birth certificate. Usually the hospitals files his birth with the feds and state/county and he/she automatically gets a ss card. They should accept that if you send it, but they may require more. You cannot file your child as a dependent until you have the Social Security number. If you file without this number, the IRS will disallow any credit that you received for claiming him/her. You'll have to wait and maybe file an extension if it's getting close to the filing deadline. Or you can file now without the child as a dependent and amend your return when you get the S.S. #. RE: As others have said most hospitals now automatically submit the information to Social Security. You should have an SS # in no time. You will probably receive it pretty soon! They are dynamos about getting that stuff out. Your tax software/forms have a complete explanation of that stuff on them so read them. I am assuming your child was born last year! If he wasn't you can't claim him until next year of course! |
