If I leave my current city job what percentage of taxes will be taken out of my pention refund? Previous answers are good. If you are age 55 or older there may not be a 10% penalty, ask your plan administrator. If you are issued a check, the standard federal withholding is 20%. That may not be enough to pay all of the taxes owed on the distribution. Meet with a tax planner and go over your options before you take that check. You should roll over this retirement account into a new one and then no taxes will be taken out. You do not want them to issue you a check because then you will pay taxes on it as well as a 10% penalty if you under 59 1/2 years old. Talk to your HR person about how to do this or find a good financial planner to help or call a mutual fund direct and ask them how to do it. Good Luck. Don gives excellent advice here. Talk with HR as well as you financial planner. If you elect to simply take the cash, the 10% penalty does exist. The check will normally have witholdings taken out, so I wouldn't expect a check for the full amount right away. This makes for a vrey expensive short term transaction. You also rob yourself of retirement money. |
