What the tip percentage should be based on, before tax or after tax?

What the tip percentage should be based on, before tax or after tax?

Here is restaurant etiquette 101:

If there is a Restaurant that you plan to go to on many ocassions, like near work or near home, you will want to strike up a conversation with the server. If you entertain them as much or better than they entertain you, they will respond that much better to you. Always leave a great tip (20% or more), especially for the first maybe three times with this server. I personally try to get to know a few of the servers, and I especially try to have conversations with other servers not waiting on me. They will remember you and service will always be excellent. You always get perks too like free drinks and so forth. After a few visits, you can dial down your tip to a regular 15% and up, depending on how happy and satisfied you are.

Now, for a regular tip, 15% is normally good, or just double the tax and add some more for good measure.

Definitely after tax if you go by percentage. I am a heavy tipper especially when I feel they went out of their way... but I make sure they do so by making their experience that much better.

I have left little to no tip as well, if they deservedly mistreated me. 20% should be the norm for good service/food but sometimes it gets a bit expensive, but remember that their pay isn't that great so lets help them out.
Before tax. What goes to the resturant?
AFTER TAX and I speak as an ex waitress who has had this debate thrown to me before. The server has no control over tax. On a typical meal we're talking an additional 2 - 5 bucks in tax which would raise the tip consequently about a dollar or two. an extra dollar on a 20% tip will raise a career waitresses' spirits. Its just a dollar.
How is using the after-tax total easier? That makes no sense.

If anything, using the before-tax total is easier, because the tax is a known percentage of the total.
Personally, I usually tip well, but I don't like someone telling what or how much I should leave. I leave depending on the service! Not how the food taste or is cooked as this is not the servers fault but the cooks fault. So if the food is lousy and cold and the server does all she/he can to make it right for you in the best way...they will get tipped for their service and not the cook! BUT...I don't want anyone telling me how I should spend MY money no more than the restaurant owner will let me spend his/her money!
