What figure to you base your tip in a restaurant, subtotal or the total amount, after taxes have been added? |
I think a tip should be based on the subtotal. Taxes vary from county to county, why should the tip be higher because of a higher tax, when the same services could be rendered for less in a county with lower taxes? Tip should be based on the pre-tax subtotal. Also, don't forget to tip for the value of any coupons or gift certificates that are used. The taxes are usually negligible enough that i use the after-tax total. But it shouldn't matter *that* much - tip more for outstanding service, less for bad service. Because the legal minimum wage for waitstaff is $2.33 per hour, I tip from the total gross amount and then some! In other words, I not only compute the tip with the tax included, but also add a good bit more! How on earth are these workers supposed to survive if their customers are not willing to furnish adequate tip money? Seriously, think about it: $2.33/hour!!! Furthermore, that is before taxes, social security, and medicare deductions are removed. Can you imagine surviving on that kind of pay?? TIP LARGE is my advice! I always tip very genorously, its I guess suppose to be 15% after taxes. I base it on how good of service I received. Base it on the food cost and if service was good and you can afford it, pump it up. You base your tip on the total after taxes. Look at it this way, the server is supposed to pay taxes on the tips, so the small amount you are adding to the tip because of the tax goes to pay their tax and allows them to keep the tip based on the subtotal. I always tip from the total with taxes. I see it this if I were a waitress would i like to get tipped from the subtotal or the total. And I like more money. Also, if the wait service was good I leave a lil bit more. |
