When tipping a waiter, do you tip on the amount before or after taxes added? |
When tipping a waiter, do you tip on the amount before or after taxes added? after tax is added and tipping ranges from 15-20% nowadays people just don't tip like they use to... i just tip on the total...so that would be WITH taxes. it's usually not so much that it would be a big deal, unless you had, like, 20 people out for dinner. Depending on the waiter I normal tip 20% b4 the taxes is added if they are good I tip for the total amount. If it's $10.00 total (tax included), and I want to tip 15%, that's $1.50 which would make it $11.50 total. Always tip after the taxes have been added. I usually just double the tax and that's what I give them. I tip 15% on the before-tax amount. I don't tip on tax, bottom line. One time I paid for a group dinner and the tax in this particular country was so high (about 17% sales tax) that the net surcharges amounted to 1.15 * 1.17 * pre-tax amount which added over 1/3 to the bill. So I made them remove the tip they charged and recalculate based on the pre-tax amount. I told them, "I don't tip for tax." If I want to tip for tax, I'd do it in a way that gets me a tax deduction for doing so. Yes, blah blah, poor waiters & waitresses will suffer at my Scroogish tipping practice. But remember, much of the tip you pay often goes to the restaurant and is spread out over the entire staff, including the maitre-d. And when I do get great deserving service from someone, I WILL leave them a hefty cash tip (tipping with a credit card doesn't help the waiter/waitress/maitre-d) but only if I know that it will go to them, not to some accountant allocating tips. Capisce? somethings gotta be tax free so...before. |
