Do you tip based on the pre- or post-tax amount of the bill?

I've always tipped based on the post-tax amount, but have I been over-tipping all these years? What is the etiquette for this?

I have been in the Food and Beverage industry for a long time...beginning in the late '70s. I've done everything from washing dishes...to training fine dining personnel/bartenders...I've managed and I've done my fair share of serving, as well!! Generally speaking, your tip should be based on the pre-tax amount of your check...not the post-tax amount!!! When a restaurant charges a gratuity for large parties (usually 6 or more guests at the same table)...that gratuity is always based on the pre-tax amount. On behalf of all the servers and bartenders you may have overtipped...let me say 'Thank You'. By being the generous and considerate being that you are....you may have made the difference in someone's life that night. And thanks for covering for the 'idiots' who don't tip at all!!! On behalf of servers and bartenders...world-wide....we love you and thanks so much!!! Source(s): Life experience!!!
tip on the post tax. your servers and service providers will thank you. when i waited tables, believe me, we remembered who tipped well and who didnt and we would give free stuff to good tippers all the time. doing things for those that didnt tip well went to the bottom of our to-do list.
i always double the tax + round it to the next dollar

so i would assume i'm tipping pre-tax...unless he or she is really cute (lol)

etiquette is being discrete about tipping + giving from your heart :)
take it from a server...always tip POST tax. Also, if you use a coupon, you should always tip on the ORIGINAL total, not the discounted total.
If you like the water and he was very nice good service tip him depending how much the bill from 1/6 to 1/7 of the bill if the service is bad you have the right to tip very low to show the water he did not do well in serving you
I tip on how good the waitress or waiter served the food
